איך מבדילים בין פעולות ארוכות (past progressive) לפעולות קצרות (past simple)?

past simple = פעולה פשוטה שקרתה בעבר (ללא התמשכות):
the kid played basketball yesterday

past progressive = פעולה שקרתה בעבר בזמן שקרתה עוד פעולה:
the kid was eating his meal while the door
bell rang.

past simple = משלימים עם מילת עבר פשוט
past progressive = משלימים עם was+ v1+ ing

חיובי:
the man was running while the sun went down

שלילה:
the man wasn't running while the sun went down

שאלה:
was the man running while the sun went down?

בדיוק גם לי היה מבחן על זה מהה
past progressive- was/were+v+ing
past simple-פועל צורה רגילה בעבר עם סיומת d, ed, ied (regular verbs)
