In the 1970's , Phillip Zimbardo, a psychologist from Stanford University, wanted to check how ordinary people behaved when they were randomly assigned the roles of "prisoners" or "guards" in jail. The participants adapted to their roles well beyond Zimbardo's expectations. The guards behaved cruelly towards the prisoners and even used psychological torture. Many of the prisoners passively accepted this abuse. The entire experiment was abruptly stopped after only 6 days because it got out of hand.
