book report: 1. summary of the main events in the story- plot:
percy jackson, 12, has been diagnosed with adhd and dyslexia. percy is studying at yansi academy - a boarding school for troubled teens, this is the sixth school in percy's six years off study. wherever he went he seemed to always get into trouble in strange ways.
at the beginning of the book, percy is on a field trip to the metropolitan museum of art, his math teacher turns into a shriveled nag with bat wings and claws and attacks him. percy's latin teacher comes to his aid and throws a ballpoint pen in his direction that turns into a bronze sword. percy's sword blow causes the monster to crumble, but after this extraordinary incident it turned out according to the people around him that the math teacher who attacked him never existed
at the end of the school year his best friend grover insists on accompanying percy home but grover's comments that percy is in danger make percy uneasy so he decides to slip away from grover and go home himself. percy's mother, sally, is a nice woman who never yelled at him who works in a candy store, married to "stinky" by percy - gabe ogliano abuses him and expects percy to provide him with money for poker games in exchange for a room.
as percy and his mother go on a weekend vacation at the beach, their time together is interrupted by a terrible howl in the middle of the night. percy friend grover shows up at their door and turns out to be a satyr with hooves and hairy legs instead of human feet. he kept an eye on percy until he was old enough to attend the half blood camp. grover tells percy that monstrous forces are chasing him and they must flee to the half-blood camp. on the way to the camp they are attacked by the minotaur but it crushes percy's mother to the point that she disappears in a shower of gold. percy caught his friend grover who fainted towards the camp in front of them and reached a place of safety.
percy meets in the camp his latin teacher who in his true form is chiron. percy learns from him that the gods do exist and are with humans all the time. they move from place to place with the heart of civilization, that is, collective consciousness. today olympus is located in america. he further learned that gods have mortal children and these children are called half-bloods or semi-gods. monsters naturally haunt the demigods and the half-blood camp serves as a safe haven for them.
at the camp, percy meets annabeth, athena's daughter, and luke, hermes' son. percy is known as the son of poseidon, one of the three great gods: zeus, poseidon and hades, who swore not to bring mortal children for the reason that they could cause trouble. shortly after it was discovered that percy was the son of poseidon for the first three generations.
it was discovered that the main bolt of zeus- the weapon on which all the other lightning was formed was stolen. zeus blames poseidon and believes poseidon used percy to steal the bolt in a plot to overthrow zeus. poseidon is offended and fears war with zeus so zeus let poseidon until the summer solstice (only ten days) to return the weapon. and that is why poseidon needs percy's help. chiron believes hades is guilty of plotting to get the two brothers to fight each other. chiron tells percy to travel to the underworld, confront hades and return the bolt to olympus before the day of the reversal to prevent war between the gods.
percy consults with the oracle before embarking on a journey and is warned that he will not be able to save what is most important in the end and will be betrayed by a friend. percy is very worried but he believes this is the only way to bring his mother back to life and sets off with two friends: grover and annabeth. along the way the three friends learn to trust each other. annabeth, whose mother is poseidon's enemy, must overcome her fears of percy. grover is forced to overcome his fears of monsters and underground places in order to persuade the council of divided elders to grant him a search license in order to seek out the absent god - pan. and percy reconciles with his anger towards his father who remembers him after 12 years.
during his travels, percy meets medusa, the chimera, procrustes the stretcher and the lotus hotel and casino (land of the lotus eaters). he meets the god of war,ares, who gives him a mysterious backpack and a nereid that gives percy three magic pearls from poseidon each of them will bring a person back to the sea from anywhere, even the land of the dead.
the three friends reach the underworld and discover that they have been deceived. the culprit is not hades, but the defeated titan kronos, who is trapped in the depths of tartarus but still capable of manipulating the dreams of the gods and humans. he hoped to start a war between his three sons - the three olympian gods. kronos caused the main lightning bolt and the wheel of darkness of hades to be stolen by a human whose identity percy does not know. unexpectedly the human thief was captured by the god of war who intended to keep the magic items to himself but krono manipulates his will and caused ares to give the main bolt to percy hidden inside the magic backpack so that percy could bring it straight to the underworld for kronos.
hades is certain that percy is the thief and holds percy's mother frozen in a shower of gold and not dead. hades demands percy to give up the magic items before she is released. when the armies of the dead surround him he realizes that he can save people using the magic pearls but he has to choose between his mother and his friends. he decides that he can not abandon his friends and promises his mother to return to her. as percy and his friends flee to the surface he fights the god of war for holding the magic items and wins. he returns hades' steering wheel to the underworld and from there returns to new york in time to prevent war.
at olympus percy meets face to face his father poseidon who tells him he is proud of him. he tells him that his mother has been returned as a peace offering by hades and when he returns home he will have to make an important choice. when percy returns home medusa's head is waiting for him (medusa has the ability to stone people). he realizes he has the ability to stone his stepfather gabe and save his mother from the unhappy marriage with him. but his mother insists she must break away from the marriage herself and percy respects her wishes.
eventually the prophecy came true: percy does not save what is most important to him by letting his mother save herself. on his return to the half-blood camp percy is betrayed by his friend luke, hermes' son who is revealed to be kronos' thief. luke poisons percy and tells him before he leaves that kronos will rise and destroy the age of gods.
percy recovers from the poison with chirons help, and realizes his adventures are not yet over. he is a hero now, and must fight the rise of the titans.
the novel is ultimately about percy coming of age, learning to trust his friends and his own abilities, accepting his parents for who they are, and choosing love and loyalty over resentment and despair.
