the story begins with auggie, the main
character, starting 5th grade at beecher
prep. up until 5th grade, he has been homeschooled, so this is his first experience going to
school with other kids. you might think that going to school with other kids would not be a
big deal, but for auggie it is. this is because he was born with a type of mandibulofacial
dystosis, which makes his face look very different from other kids.
while at beecher prep, auggie is bullied by a student named julian, fortunately, his
friends summer and jack help him. things get really bad when jack punches julian in the
mouth because julian tries to get jack to switch partners for the science-fair project. jack
was partnered with auggie, and julian wanted him to ditch auggie and be his partner.
after jack punches julian, a war starts at school. jack, auggie and few other boys versus
julian and his many friends.
as the school year is coming to a close and the war is losing steam, the 5th
graders go on a nature retreat. auggie is excited, especially since julian is not going.
during the retreat, however, auggie and jack are ambushed by 7th graders from another
school. it seems like their days are numbered when amos, miles and henry, who are
friends with julian, rescue them. when the students return to school from the retreat, a
shift has happened. julian has lost the war and auggie is popular. when auggie wins the
henry ward beecher award at graduation, his classmates are cheering him on, standing
close to him and want him in their pictures. and, as stated by auggie, for the first time i
can remember, i wasnt even thinking about my face. i was just smiling a big fat happy
smile for all the different cameras clicking away at me (p.307).
character
the main character in wonder is august pullman, a.k.a. auggie. he is a boy, and he
is old enough to start 5th grade. auggie is like kids his age in many ways. he likes star
wars, hot dogs, smores, and video games. what makes him different is his face. as
compared to other kids: his eyes are about an inch lower and they bulge out; his lower
eyelids sag so much that you can see the red inside; he doesnt have eyebrows or
eyelashes; his nose is big and fleshy; his head is pinched in on the sides where his ears
should be; he doesnt have cheekbones; his features (nose, etc.) look like they have been
melted; he has scars around his mouth from different surgeries; his teeth are small and
splay out; he has an overbite and a very small chin; and he has tiny cauliflower-shaped
ears (pp. 88-89).
despite the way his face looks, auggie is a pretty cool kid. one of auggies traits is
his sense of humor. this sense of humor is seen when auggie jokes about the way he looks
to other kids. for example, one day he sees two girls at school writing a note on a piece of
uglydoll stationary and says to them, did you know the guy who created the uglydolls
based them on me? (p. 209) another one of auggies traits is his courage. this courage is evident every day that auggie goes to school because he is bullied and treated like a freak.
a third trait is his forgiveness. this is evident when auggie acknowledges and responds to
julians apology, and. when he forgives jack for saying mean things about him to julian.
setting
the majority of wonder takes place at beecher prep which is a private school in new
york city. although most of the action occurs at school, some of the action also occurs at
auggies house and at a nature reserve in pennsylvania. the story of wonder takes place
in modern times because there are references to modern technology, e.g. xbox. the specific
time for wonder is during auggies 5th grade year at beecher prep. in particular, the story
starts in the month of august before school begins and ends during the start of summer
break.
conflict
the conflict in wonder is external and is between auggie and julian. in particular,
auggie is bullied by julian at beecher prep school. in addition, julian and his friends play a
lot of mean tricks on auggies friend jack. although auggie has support from his friends
summer and jack, the battle between auggie and julian gets pretty fierce with julian
sending auggie really hateful notes like: i bet your mother wishes youd never been born.
you should do everybody a favor - and die. as the school year progresses, people on julians
side begin to lose interest in the war. however, the real resolution to the conflict occurs
during the fifth-grade nature retreat. at the retreat, which julian does not attend, auggie
and jack are attacked by a group of 7th graders from another school. miles, henry and
amos, who are friends with julian, witness the event and help auggie and jack escape. the
result of this rescue is that auggie becomes popular and julian loses the war and the
support of his friends.
theme
the theme, or main idea, for wonder is dont judge a book by its cover. in other
words, you should treat everyone with respect regardless of what they look like. for most
of the school year, auggie was not treated with respect because of what he looked like. at
the end of the school year, however, his classmates realized there was much more to
auggie than his face. as a result, he became accepted by his classmates, even by those who
had been at war with him.
