The major conflict of the story is a self conflict. It is the dilemma between do what America really wants to do (despite her family wants) - choosing not to participte in the competition and be with her secret lover - Aspan, get marry him and living as a six. Or choosing to participate in the competition plus giving a real chance to win the prince's heart and become the next Princess of Ilea. Praticipate in the selection is an amazing oppertunity to change her and her family's life beacuse of the fact that Americ's family will get paid for the particiation of America and they'll turn from poor Fives to threes, which makes it harder for America to decide what to do.
